We often get asked about the origin of the company name - well here's a little history lesson!
The literal translation of DAL RIATA means “ Riata’s share”. The Riata were one of the ancient tribes in Ireland and the share refers to their kingdom in the North East corner of Ireland, (in modern days this covers Co Antrim and part of Co Derry). Our oral traditions and written history state that their Scottish invasion was led by the three sons of Fergus Mor Mac Erc, the King of the Irish Dal Riata. These sons, named Fergus, Angus, and Lorne Mac Erc set sail in the 5th century from Tor Head, on the Antrim coast, to the Mull of Kintyre. They consecrated a new branch of the Dal Riata kingdom in Argyll absorbing the stone-fortress of Dunadd as their home point. They brought their Gaelic culture with them so that they were racially and culturally Gaelic and they spoke the Gaelic language becoming the entire highland culture for a thousand years. Thus the entire history of Highlands and Islands and the North of Ireland became one.
